Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, who is far too wily not to understand that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require the involvement of Jude Bellingham, although it is equally up to the player to fit into the tactical structures and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
Tuchel wants the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is about using it constructively. Personal talent counts but England understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when stardom prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the recent team selection. He observed the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about appreciating the group’s energy and values. Naturally, he has responded in champion style, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have made his squad place precarious.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German said. “Bellingham displays the edge. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he has. We all must help him and build a setting which he can use his drive towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s meaningless matches versus Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted playmaker in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has struggled to reach his best recently but the boss had to consider the player after his performance in the Champions League match versus the German side recently.
The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping the captain's style in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be through the middle. The coach wants him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision about him for years. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
He conceded there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to playing for Man City in a particular setup, to have a clear task. I think he profits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager discussed one star bursting through for tap-ins and the other scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested using Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options if Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to net in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. The coach will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“At this point eventually it falls to the duty of the individuals,” he said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an even better one.
