Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
