The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
