The Actress Expresses Speaking About Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ Tearing the Country Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she believes it's no longer fitting to voice opinions against the Trump government, worried it could worsen polarizing arguments and further divisions throughout the United States.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Says the Actress
Speaking with media, the Oscar winner commented, “When Trump was first in office, I thought I was running around without clear direction. But experience has shown, through repeated campaigns, celebrities fail to influence at all on electoral choices.”
The actor went on, “What’s the point? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to worsen tensions tearing the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has spoken candidly about voting for both right and leftwing contenders in past elections. Growing up with a right-leaning family in her home state, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in 2008 prior to switching to the Democrats and stating she realized during the Obama era that backing conservatives was undermining her own rights as a woman.
Past Statements
Earlier in her career, she commented that a Trump victory could represent “a catastrophic event” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she voiced her backing to Vice President Harris, “since I think she’s an excellent choice and I am confident that she will take all necessary steps to protect reproductive rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Jennifer Lawrence was aligned with numerous celebrities in her opposition to Donald Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the lack of leverage public figures have over the voting intentions was emphasized by his election win.
“Another four years feels different,” said the actress of Trump’s presidency. “As he said what he was going to do. We knew what he did for four years. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”
Latest Film
The actor is highlighting her new film, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she plays a recent parent who struggles with her mental health in the countryside. During a media event for the project in the film festival, the star spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is no less than a genocide and it’s awful.”
Wider Issues
Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the conversations of American politics right now and how that is going to be commonplace to the younger generation today. It’s going to be typical to them that elected officials deceive.”
She aimed to shift anger about the issue to policymakers rather than celebrities. “Stay focused on who is responsible,” she advised, in what many took to be a nod to the then-recent pledge signed by numerous entertainment industry figures to boycott specific industry bodies.
Relatable Experiences
Jennifer Lawrence, who won an Oscar aged 22 for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal in the new film. Even though Ramsay has denied the narrative being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and mental illness, Lawrence said that she connected with elements of her role’s experience after the delivery of her second son, soon after production wrapped.
“It was fear for my son,” she commented, “imagining every potential danger, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was seeing a therapist, but I got on a treatment called that medicine and I continued it for a short period and it made a difference.”
Career Moments
Lawrence also spoke of the freeing requirement of completing nude scenes in the project while she was some months pregnant and limited physically.
“There’s a freedom,” she remarked, regarding the need to set aside self-consciousness. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, What technically are the differences between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
