Reigning Sabalenka Secures Back-to-Back WTA Player of the Year Awards.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka has been chosen the Women's Tennis Association player of the year for a second consecutive year.
The twenty-seven-year-old secured four tournament victories – the most on tour – which included retaining the US Open in September against Amanda Anisimova to secure her fourth Grand Slam singles title.
A Year of High Performance
Across the season, Sabalenka competed in a tour-best nine championship matches, with losses coming against Madison Keys in the Australian Open final at the start of the year and Coco Gauff in the French Open final.
The Belarusian also triumphed at the Brisbane International in January, the Miami Open during the spring, and the Madrid Open as the clay season progressed. She spent the whole season as the world number one, ending 2025 on top of the rankings for a second successive year.
In July, she achieved the status of being the first player to top 12,000 WTA ranking points since Serena Williams did so nearly a decade ago.
Record-Breaking Numbers
Sabalenka finished the season with a sixty-three to twelve match record, and picked up a historic £11m in tournament winnings.
She received nearly 80% of the votes cast by global tennis journalists.
Later this month, she is poised to compete against 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios in a Battle of the Sexes-style exhibition match in a bid to "raise women's tennis to a higher level".
Other WTA Award Honorees
- Returning Star of the Year: Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, twenty-eight, received the award after taking 13-month break after the arrival of her daughter and returning to the sport at the start of this year.
- Newcomer of the Year: Canadian 19-year-old Victoria Mboko was honored with the award after beginning the season positioned beyond the world's top 300 and rising to the eighteenth spot.
- Partnership of the Year: Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend were voted after securing their second career Grand Slam title as a pair.
- Most Improved Player of the Year: Amanda Anisimova was named after making five championship matches.
Recently, Carlos Alcaraz secured three honours in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Awards, including the year-end number one award, while Jannik Sinner was chosen as the fan favorite for a third time.
