New England Warming More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.
The American area famous for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is undergoing a swift change. Fresh analysis shows that New England is warming faster than nearly any other place on the planet.
Unprecedented Pace of Transformation
The velocity of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The pace of its temperature rise has apparently accelerated significantly in the past five years.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," explained a lead researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The research positions the New England region among the fastest-warming areas in the world, together with the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the American South," the scientist noted.
Study Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers examined three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3°C in the same period.
"This represents very fast heating, which is concerning," said the study author.
Key Climate Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are increasing faster than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being eroded.
Marine Influences and the "Energy Storage"
A major cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is directing warmer water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then pushed further inland by wind patterns.
"The excess heat from global warming is being stored in the oceans like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a recipient of that heat."
Consequences on Culture and Weather
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has suffered extreme weather shocks in recent years, including devastating floods and extended dry spells.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic elements of regional life:
- Syrup production is being affected by shifting climate conditions.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or moved multiple times due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of insufficient snow.
"I live just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has largely vanished from much of the southern part of the region."
