Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unwanted offerings might be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Clear-Out
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. The eclectic collection could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to sold to the highest bidder by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds going to various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
These gifts reportedly locked away in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused over a long period.
A complete inventory has not yet been officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was reviewed by officials. The query focused on whether a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with garnering support from global statesmen and making Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to handle the state presents that build up during a time in office.
