Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
