EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
