Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Shelved Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has announced.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar suggesting the president had urged him to give up significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president supported a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the hostilities on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he said.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that involve the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky said talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday preceded speculation that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
