Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
