"When are you chatting with the band?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several high-profile supporters have openly begged for the honor.

It's clear something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

"Therefore everyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The band have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the band will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
