Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
